WhatsApp Is Bringing Back Text Status Updates.
WhatsApp introduced a Snapchat-like Status feature, with photos and videos, last month.
Due to popular demand, text status updates are coming back to WhatsApp.
The Facebook-owned messaging application began rolling out a Snapchat-like Status feature—including photos and videos—last month.
However, WhatsApp confirmed to Josh Constine of TechCrunch that text feature About Status is being rolled out to Android users over the next week, with iOS users to follow shortly thereafter.
Users with access to the “new” old feature can set text statuses in the About sections of their profiles, and they can see their friends’ statuses by starting new chat threads or via the information for group chats.
WhatsApp said in a statement to Constine:
We heard from our users that people missed the ability to set a persistent text-only update in their profile, so we’ve integrated this feature into the About section in profile settings. Now the update will appear next to profile names anytime you view contacts, such as when creating a new chat or looking at group info.
At the same time, we’re continuing to build on the new Status feature that gives people fun and engaging ways to share photos, videos and GIFs with their friends and family throughout their day.
WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum said in a blog post last month introducing the then-new Status feature:
We are excited to announce that, coinciding with WhatsApp’s eighth birthday Feb. 24, we are reinventing the Status feature. Starting today, we are rolling out an update to status, which allows you to share photos and videos with your friends and contacts on WhatsApp in an easy and secure way. Yes, even your status updates are end-to-end encrypted.
